Hispanic Police Officers Association's Valentine's Day Dance

Yesterday I attended the Hispanic Police Officers Association’s Valentine’s Day dance, at which Sgt. John Saavedra was awarded the HPOA Top Cop award.  Despite being severely wounded and on the brink of death while conducting an operation, to save his life and the lives of his teammates, Saavedra neutralized a suspect who was firing at them and even engaged in hand-to-hand combat to neutralize another.  I congratulate Sgt. Saavedra for his award and thank him for his unflinching commitment to duty. Sgt. Saavedra is a hero, and our community is safer because of him.
